The KTM 690 SMC R has been incredibly successful since its debut, with the 690 engine making its first appearance in 2007 and undergoing several updates across different models leading up to the current 690 SMC R. And of course, bikes like the Husqvarna FS 701 and GasGas SM 700 being the same bike but with a few of their own estetics.
Ducati’s decision to enter this market with their own engine and bike makes sense. While we can only speculate on performance without test rides, one notable difference between Ducati and KTM is torque. The Ducati may have slightly less torque than the KTM 690 engine but compensates with higher revving capabilities.
Modell | Engine displacement | Hp | Torque, Nm | Dry weight | Price
KTM 690 SMC R | 692,7 cc | 74hp @8000rpm | 73,5Nm @6500rpm | 147kg | 130.900SEK
Husqvarna FS 701 | 692,7 cc | 74hp @8000rpm | 73,5Nm @6500rpm | 147kg | 130.900SEK
GasGas SM 700 | 692,7 cc | 74hp @8000rpm | 73,5Nm @6500rpm | 147kg | 120.500SEK
Ducati Hypermotard 698 | 659 cc | 77,5hp @9750rpm | 62,8Nm @8000rpm | 151kg | 136.000SEK
Ducati Hypermotard RVE | 659 cc | 77,5hp @9750rpm | 62,8Nm @8000rpm | 151kg | 148.000SEK
Ducati Hypermotard with Termignoni exhasut | 659 cc | 84,5hp @9750rpm | – | 149,5kg | 163.430SEK
Ducati Hypermotard RVE with Termignoni exhaust | 659 cc | 84,5hp @9750rpm | – | 149,5kg | 175.430SEK |
When focusing solely on engine specifications, the significant difference between the models lies in torque. The Ducati falls short by just over 10 Nm compared to the 690 engine, but it compensates by being a higher-revving machine. This raises the question: has Ducati designed its bike for track performance, while KTM targets a more hooligan-style riding experience?
In terms of equipment, Ducati offers a comprehensive electronics package with various riding profiles, including cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control, engine braking control, and launch control. The RVE comes equipped with can be added to the stock version for an additional cost. The KTM comes standard with a simpler version of TC and ABS. Both bikes offer customization options through aftermarket accessories.
Choosing between these bikes may come down to personal preference and budget. While the GasGas SM 700 may stand out for having a lower price and aluminum rims, individual taste will ultimately determine the best choice.
Additionally, for those with the budget, Termignoni’s products offer a distinct sound that may be appealing.
We have scheduled track tests for both bikes in May. We’ll inform you whether you’ve chosen the right bike after the tests.
